III.3                 Pseudo Knowledge
                     Or Paranormal Phenomena
Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity.
But I am not absolutely sure about the universe.
                                                                             Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

In a lifetime almost everyone will have puzzling, unexplained experiences. However, it would be fallacious to account for the mysterious with the even more mysterious, and that is what paranormal claims often do. So far, all these claims, when there was an opportunity to examine them, have been debunked as natural phenomena, deception, delusions or outright fraud. Absolutely nothing outside the currently known laws or regularities of nature has ever been discovered and scientifically verified.

Introduction
A phenomenon (plural phenomena) is any occurrence, circumstance, or experience that is perceptible by the senses and that can be scientifically described or evaluated. However, the adjective paranormal indicates a claim that the described psychic or physical event is outside the range of the normal, that is, it is beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation. These pseudo knowledge or pseudoscientific claims are often harmful and should therefore be demystified or debunked.
The debunking approach is a response to claims of paranormal phenomena, and consists of finding a "normal" explanation instead of paranormal for the account. The basis for this approach is Occam's razor, which suggests that the simplest solution is the best one. Since science predicts what can be expected in the natural world, the debunking approach assumes the position that some phenomena are events that are apparent to the senses and can therefore be scientifically described and investigated. Other claims are completely disconnected from reality or the senses but can be examined with the tools of logic and reason.
The skeptical approach, in contrast to debunking, which actively seeks to disprove the claim, requires that claims be proven, and with the burden of proof by whoever asserts a paranormal claim.
Some events listed below have been explained by the laws of nature; hence, they are not paranormal. Other events defy scientific verification; hence, these claims are probably bogus, that is, false, not true, non-sensical, or deceptive. While we should always keep an open mind, the paranormal phenomena in part "B." is a representative sample.

A. The Power of Coincidence in Fallacious Belief Formation
Almost everyone thinks of another person from time to time, and sometimes forthwith that person calls or makes otherwise contact. Also, billions of people have dreams everyday, and millions have soon after its content come true. Moreover, millions pray for this or that, and thousands get shortly thereafter their wishes fulfilled.
To those whose thoughts, dreams, and prayers are before long paired with a corresponding outcome, this event has an important effect. It appears to them that the first event caused the one that succeeded it because it is human nature to look for causal explanations. If the two stimuli would have occurred unpaired, that is, individually at a longer time interval, then they would have had a much lesser effect and probably no claims of a cause-effect relationship would be made.
So, these are coincidences which are defined as "an accidental and remarkable occurrence of events or ideas at the same time, suggesting but lacking a causal relationship." Also see "Coincidence" below.

B. Events that have Found no Plausible Scientific Support

Age Regression and projection claims that under hypnotic therapy the patient can  return to an earlier stage of life in order to recall memories or project themselves forward to see a desired outcome of their current behavior. Many cases of "recovered memories" involving child abuse, alien abduction and other traumatic incidents have subsequently been discredited.

Altered State of Consciousness (ASC), also named altered state of mind, is any condition that is significantly different from a normative waking beta wave state. Hence, it is a state of awareness that differs significantly from baseline or normal consciousness.

A "baseline brain state might be best defined by the presence of two important subjective characteristics: the psychological sense of a self at the center of one’s perception and a sense that this self is identified with one’s body."

States of consciousness where one loses the sense of identity with one’s body or with one’s perceptions are definitely ASCs. They may be:

  • Naturally occurring within dreams, lucid dreams, euphoria, ecstasy, psychosis, frenzied dancing or chanting,

  • Accidentally happen by such things as trauma, sleep disturbance or deprivation, sensory deprivation or sensory overload, neuro-chemical imbalance, epileptic seizure, oxygen depravation, nitrogen narcosis as in deep diving, or fever.

  • Intentionally take place thru mind-control techniques, hypnosis, meditation, prayer, or disciplines such as Mantra Meditation, Yoga, Sufism or Surat Shabda Yoga.

  • Attained through the ingestion of psychoactive drugs such as alcohol and opiates, or psychoactive plants and chemicals such as LSD, peyote, marijuana, mescaline, and psychedelic mushrooms.

  • Induced by electrically stimulating parts of the brain or by ingesting psychotropic drugs.

  • Finally, resistance to ASCs may be diminished by religious or ideological indoctrination, particularly during the formative years of a child, by withholding the facts of the real world and the opportunity to think critical and for oneself.

A newer term for ASC is trance, which includes all "altered states of consciousness" as well as the various forms of waking trance states. So, the many causes of ASCs are known. They are abnormal states of consciousness, but there is nothing paranormal about them.

Astrology claims to foretell the future by studying the supposed influence of the  relative positions of the moon, planets, sun, and stars on human affairs.

Biorhythms claims that a person's physical, emotional, and intellectual energy levels can be predicted by charting certain biorhythms such as any biological cycle that involves periodic changes in blood pressure, body temperature.

Channeling claims that a person can become a conduit for a deceased person, as someone from an ancient culture, who imparts information about a previous life

Clairvoyance claims the ability to perceive things that are not in sight or that cannot be seen. Clairvoyance is usually associated with precognition, which is psychic knowledge of something in advance of its occurrence such as telling the future.

Coincidence claims that there is a causal relationship between accidental and remarkable occurrences of events or ideas at the same time. Considering the multitude of things happening all the time, the occurrence of odd coincidences are almost guaranteed. The psychologist David G. Myers concluded:

That a particular specified event or coincidence will occur is very unlikely. That some astonishing unspecified events will occur is certain. That is why remarkable coincidences are noted in hindsight, not predicted with foresight.

Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) claims to become aware of things outside one's normal sense perception, that is, perception occurring independently of sight, hearing, or other sensory processes. People who have extrasensory perception are said to be psychic.

Fire Walking refers to the activity of walking on hot coals, rocks or cinders without burning the soles of one's feet. Whether the firewalkers soles get burned or not depends on the temperature of the coals and on how fast he moves, rather than on willpower to create a protective shield.

Fortune Telling is the act or practice of predicting the future. Those who claim to have this ability are also known as palm-reader, tarot reader, tea-leaf reader, mind-reader, crystal gazer, spiritualist, medium, seer, psychic, soothsayer, oracle, prophet, phrenologist.

Mind over Matter--see psychokinesis, telekinesis, and fire walking.

Near-Death Experiences (NDE) refers to a wide range of personal experiences associated with imminent death. It includes sensations ranging from detachment from the body to feelings of levitation, extreme fear, security, or warmth, the experience of absolute dissolution, and the presence of a light, which some people interpret as a deity or spiritual presence that indicates an afterlife. Others report a life review, that is, they rapidly sees much or the totality of their life history in chronological sequence and in great detail. Most of the scientific community regards such experiences as hallucinatory.

Out-of-Body Experiences (OBE or OOBE) typically involves a sensation of floating outside of one's body and, in some cases, perceiving one's physical body from a place outside one's body. It is claimed that about one in ten people has had an out-of-body experience at some time in their lives. Moreover, OBErs sometimes report details during an OBE which were unknown to them beforehand. and reportedly may also lead to astral projection.

Psychokinesis means literally "movement from the mind." It claims that physical events can be influenced by thought processes. The variety of magic tricks used to demonstrate psychokinetic powers is impressive. The bending of spoons and keys is probably the most popular one.

Reincarnation is mainly the claim that there is such a thing as an immortal soul that reappears after death in another and different bodily form. However, all life forms consist of matter and energy that developed and were assembled according to  instructions transmitted in genes that started to evolve some 3.5 billion years ago.    So, each individual's genes can be traced back as an unbroken chain to this beginning. However, unless a person has offspring, these genes get destroyed upon a person's death. It follows that new life too is part of this unbroken chain of genes. Its personality, being, and characteristics, etc., what some call its soul, is completely dependent on matter and energy that is put together according to its nature as transmitted by its genetic makeup--it is not determined by prior behavior or the soul of a dead person.

Subliminal Perception claims that message can be delivered beneath the human conscious threshold of perception to the subconscious mind. The subconscious may then influence the conscious mind without being aware of the original cause. These messages would be words or images flashed between the frames of an advertising or other film. Also, it may be aural such as a  radio or TV broadcast constantly at very low volume. While there is almost no empirical support for the usefulness of subliminal messaging, it is either scientifically verifiable or bogus but not paranormal.

Telekinesis, like Psychokinesis above, claims that it can cause an object to move by means of psychic forces, as directed by a spiritualistic medium, and not by means of any physical force.

Telepathy means literally, "distance feeling." The term is a shortened version of mental telepathy and refers to mind-reading or mind-to-mind communication through "Extra Sensory Perception (ESP)" se above.

UFOs, unidentified flying objects visiting earth from distant interstellar space. They would have to move at close to the speed of light which is probably not possible without being light. With a hundred billion or so solar systems in our galaxy alone, why would a technologically advanced people want to visit us. In particular since they would be familiar with us long before they could get here through our television programs that radiate into outer space.
